Sometimes when it comes to food I surprise even myself.
Yesterday after the Friday Beer hour at the MPI we went to a new restaurant. I had gone back to the online critic and decided to go to their favorite restaurant in Dresden, Striesener Kanzlei. It is in the part of town called Blasewitz. (I can not remember if I told you that when Google translates a web page with the word "Blasewitz" they call the area "Blister Joke". It actually is a lovely section of Dresden.)
Anyway, back to the story. I had done some research on Striesener Kanzlei by going to their web page. Their menu was online, and there I discovered this beautiful German word, "Überraschungsmenü". What does it mean? I looked the word up at LEO, but it did not exist. But I know the Germans love to make up words by stringing words together. "Überraschung" is surprise. The word is feminine.
So, I discover that there is a surprise menu, and of course when the waiter asks what I would like to order I say "Überraschungsmenü". For a fixed price I will get served three courses, and each course is a surprise.
Oh no! You are thinking I was served bugs. No, it was not that bad. But close, I was served rabbit, like Bugs.
I must say it was the best rabbit I have ever eaten. And if I am lucky, it might be the best rabbit I will ever eat in my life.
Coda: We just came back from dinner with Andy, who is Australian. He reminded me that rabbits are horrible pests, and destroyed much of the vegetation in Australia. So if we all got in the habit of eating rabbits, particularly Australian wild, free range rabbits, the world might be a better place. Something to think about. But actually he recommended kangaroo. Turns out they sometimes serve kangaroo at the MPI canteen. I will have to keep an eye out for it.
